Don’t let hunger get the best of you this year! While many processed snacks can knock you off track of your health goals in a hurry, avoiding snacking altogether might cause you to overindulge during mealtimes.

Instead, look for healthier ways to ease your appetite between meals by incorporating more fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grains and less potato chips and candy bars.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Energy Bites – Roll whole-grain old-fashioned oats with ground flaxseed, peanut butter, chocolate chips and honey.
  • Homemade Hummus – Served with raw veggies, hummus offers a creamy, comforting snack made with chickpeas and tahini.
  • Trail Mix – Skip the miniature chocolate candies and trail mix is otherwise a healthy treat. Make your own at home with variations of almonds, peanuts, cashews, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and dried fruits.
  • Smoothies and Smoothie Bowls – Blend Greek yogurt and skim or 2% milk with your favorite fruits, such as bananas, blueberries, blackberries or strawberries (or a combination). Top bowls with whole fruits, berries or almonds.
  • Apple Donuts – Swap out those empty doughnut calories for a fruit-infused version. Core apples then slice crosswise for your desired thickness. Spread with Greek yogurt then top with flavorful additions such as blueberries, chopped strawberries, halved grapes, sunflower seeds or banana slices.
