Some grilling enthusiasts sear delicious, tender steaks. Others are masterful cheeseburger and bratwurst chefs. Smoking experts have perfected the art of slowly cooking pork shoulder and brisket.

But there’s one thing all grill masters have in common: clean, pristine cooking equipment.

If you’re taking your grilling game to the next level this summer, maintaining your space can help you achieve memorable meals on grates that are free of grime and with heat sources that work to perfection – every time.

Keep these tips in mind, from routine cleaning to annual maintenance.

Each Time You Use the Grill

  • Heat the grill entirely before cooking, allowing the heat to disinfect the grates. Once you’re finished cooking, open the vents or turn gas/electric grills to full heat to burn off drippings and grease.
  • Brush the grates before and after cooking.
  • Once the grill is cooled after use, cover it to keep the elements out.

Occasionally Throughout the Grilling Season

  • Empty ash bins and drip pans.
  • Thoroughly clean grates by hand.
  • Brush out the inside of the grill underneath the grates.
  • Crank up the heat on electric and gas grills to burn off residue.

Annually at the End of Grilling Season

  • Deep clean cooking grates by removing from the grill and soaking in hot, soapy water.
  • Brush out the inside of the grill.
  • Clean out the burners on gas/propane grills and ensure the flame is burning correctly.
  • Wash the exterior.
  • Check all parts to ensure nothing is broken and needs replaced.
