Sometimes that blazing hot summer sun is too much to bear. When you can’t beat the heat, bring the kids back inside for a bit of fun that doesn’t require sunscreen.

Your kitchen is probably full of exciting materials and ingredients children can use for crafting edible art – it just takes creativity and a little inspiration. From fruit-filled ice pops to chocolatey treats and campfire goodies, they’re a few steps away from a delicious art lesson.

Fruity Ice Pops

Break out the blender and pulse your kiddos’ favorite fruits – like watermelon, pineapple, peaches, berries or a combination – to a smooth consistency. Pour into ice pop molds with whole chunks of fresh fruit then freeze for a snack that can be enjoyed once frozen.

Toothpick Sculptures

Short on art supplies? All you need are grapes and toothpicks for children to construct houses, constellations and other fun shapes that hold together with ease.

Chocolate-Covered Bananas

Melt chocolate in a saucepan or the microwave. Lay out peeled bananas and edible decorations like sprinkles then let creativity take control. Insert ice pop sticks into the bananas and lay on a parchment-lined sheet try to freeze for a refreshing, chocolatey treat.

“Campfire” Snacks

Creating a treat that calls to mind the great outdoors – without actually dealing with the smoke and heat of a campfire – requires crackers, grapes, pretzels and cheese. Lay out crackers on a plate, line up grapes for the “ring,” lay small chunks of cheese vertically in the center and surround the cheese “fire” with pretzel sticks like wooden logs.
